Mount Athos

Visiting Mount Athos requires a special permit (Diamonitirion) issued by the Pilgrims' Bureau in Thessaloniki or Ouranoupoli. Men are allowed to apply for a permit, while women are strictly prohibited. The permit allows a limited stay, and visitors must adhere to the monastic rules and regulations.

The best time to visit Mount Athos is during the shoulder seasons (spring and autumn) when the weather is pleasant, and the crowds are smaller. Summers can be hot, and winters can be harsh. It's also important to check the monastery's schedules, as they may have specific visiting hours or restrictions.

Visitors should expect a very different experience from a typical tourist destination. Dress modestly (long sleeves and trousers for men), respect the monastic rules, and be prepared for a simple lifestyle. Accommodation is usually provided within the monasteries, and meals are simple, often vegetarian. Photography is restricted in certain areas, and silence is often required during prayer times.
