Carcassonne

The best time to visit Carcassonne is during the shoulder seasons, specifically May-June and September-October. The weather is pleasant, the crowds are smaller than in peak summer, and prices for accommodation are often more reasonable.

The primary attraction is the Cité de Carcassonne, a UNESCO World Heritage site, with its impressive ramparts, castle (Château Comtal), and basilica. Other attractions include the Pont Vieux (Old Bridge), the Bastide Saint-Louis (the lower town), and the Canal du Midi.

Carcassonne, like much of France, values politeness. A simple 'Bonjour' or 'Bonsoir' when entering a shop or restaurant is appreciated. Tipping is not mandatory, but rounding up the bill is common. Also, be aware that many shops and businesses close for a midday 'siesta', typically between 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM.

The Cité de Carcassonne is best explored on foot. The lower town, Bastide Saint-Louis, is also walkable, but you can also use the local bus service. For exploring the surrounding region, renting a car is recommended, or you can use taxis and ride-sharing services.

Carcassonne is known for its hearty cuisine. Try the Cassoulet, a rich bean stew with meat, and the local wines from the Languedoc-Roussillon region. Many restaurants offer excellent dining experiences within the Cité, but also explore the restaurants in the Bastide for a wider variety of options.
